Australian Financial Review magazine feature on ‘The Worst (Australian) Public Policy Decision of the 21st Century Thus Far’

The July 2024 edition of the Australian Financial Review‘s monthly magazine includes a feature article by Myriam Robin, editor of the ‘Rear Window’ column, on my ‘one-man mission’ (as she calls it) to undo what I’ve called ‘the Worst Public Policy Decision of the 21st Century Thus Far’, namely, the ‘deal’ (originally ‘done by the Morrison Government in 2018, but extended last year by the Albanese Government until 2030) which in effect gifts Australia’s richest state, Western Australia, an estimated $53bn over 11 years from the Federal Budget, by perverting the long-standing basis for distributing revenue from the GST among the states and territories. It’s not uncritical – it gives Western Australian advocates of the ‘deal’ an eminently fair hearing, as well as explaining my side of the argument.
